All Things Respond to Love

New Moon
December 20, 2006
28 Sagittarius 33′

If life is so far from what you expect of it, why keep throwing your hand in disgust and dismissal, when you can offer it a tender touch and watch it cozy up to your love?

I will never forget the conversation I had with my friend Connie P. about 20 years ago. “All things respond to love,” she said. “Think about it.”  I did, with a little help from her. If a person loves a table, maybe because it has been in the family for generations, and there is an old story about how your great-grandfather changed the lives of others sitting at that table teaching  people who couldn’t read how to read until the day he was poisoned while he dined at that same table for doing so. The table is also well made and beautiful. That table, loved and revered, received careful attention and mindfulness. When moving, great care was taken as to how it was protected, carried and loaded. That love, felt by those who watched it being cared for, recreated itself in them, and they, too, regard it carefully.

Loved like this, the table stays sturdy and beautiful.

Why would this not be so for a child or a woman or a man?

Maybe we have to find a way to give loving attention to that which is in our lives, that which is at our hand or feet. We can’t just wait around for that person or situation to come that will allow us unleash our pent-up love. While you’re waiting, you’re not practicing the art of loving. Your ability to perform the wondrous acts of love atrophies from disuse.

The most powerful thing that you know is that we are One manifest as many. We are the one’s we’re with and we squander it. And guess what y’all?  It’s getting hot in here. Seven of the ten planets are in fire signs, and six of them are in Sagittarius. The New Moon literally rises with Pluto, the Phoenix, and we (despite the efforts of some to downgrade Pluto) have a collective ability to rise, to catch the fire, to be lifted up, to take a stand, be a man. Be a woman. Light your candle and sit it upon a height where it may be seen.

We burn. Somewhere in the circle that we call your birth chart is a section of 30 degrees governed by the constellation, Sagittarius. We all have this section. You may never have had your chart calculated or you might not believe in astrology, but it is there and right now it is occupied.

Sagittarius is a fire sign and that means it is enthusiastic and inspirational. It is the fire of the seeker. Sagittarius is not just shooting an arrow into the air. The arrow has a definite target because Sagittarius perceives. Its arrow is aimed at piercing accepted limits and norms, aiming for something higher. And Sagittarius represents the collective. Its keywords are, “I pierce,” but just as Gemini is “I think,” Sagittarius, its opposite sign, is “We think.”  What we think and where we want to go with that thinking is based on our agreements–the emotional pacts that we form in Scorpio, the sign directly preceding Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter and Jupiter is said to rule the principle of expansion. It gives us the burning desire to grow, to become more individually and collectively. The New Moon speaks, not just to more, bigger and better, but to transcending, to rising above it, to getting over it, to leaving it behind. To get the best, we must reach for the best and aspire to the best, knowing that the good is somewhere between and above ourselves and others.

Here’s the thing. We don’t usually all agree on what is best, especially if we are not getting a higher view that allows us to see more. Some of us are going to push, and others of us are going to feel pushed. (Mars square Uranus). There are bound to be some awakenings of the rude variety that might lead us to run around without our heads, without our reasoning ability. Be very careful about jumping to conclusions.

The 9th house of Sagittarius is Leo.

Sagittarius, speak to us of the higher mind, since this is the area of life that you govern.

“The higher mind relates to the search for that which furthers our human life, and so it governs higher education, law and religion. To Sagittarius these things are intensely personal. Sagittarius does not want someone to tell them what us what we should believe. As a mutable fire sign, Sagittarians may be constantly changing or seeking change in our relationships. We are really curious about people and like to have new discoveries and adventures through new relationships or interests. But mentally, Sagittarians are stubborn. Sagittarians are all about making up our own minds in our own time, though occasionally we might be rather zealous in preaching to you. We like preaching, orating, dramatizing, expressing ourselves. It makes us feel alive. We think we know the best way and are sometimes determined to get you to see it our way.

“For this New Moon, we would like to speak of the willingness to transcend, to get over it, forgive and let it go. It being the ways others have transgressed against us. We are needing to give up the need for revenge. Why?  Because the hatred you are remembering, you are remembering in your cells. Ill feelings make you ill. You’ve got to try to be happy. You have to go on with your life.”

I remember watching a Barbara Walters interview with the young woman who Mike Tyson was convicted of raping. She told Barbara that Mike would be able to go on with his life, but she would never be able to go on with hers, she would be forever scarred by what he did to her. She would never trust again. She was once outgoing and she had become withdrawn.

I thought to myself, why let him take all off that?  Why let him take the rest of your life?

Same with us. Let’s get over it, whatever it is. Let’s not hold onto it, cling to it, mark ourselves by it, and vow to get even, but never get even, as in balanced, steady, stable, secure and okay within ourselves?  Why mar your future by dragging along a past?  Let the past teach you what you need to know about yourself and move on.
