Merlin, Where are You?

New Moon | September 2, 2024 | 11 Virgo 4’

Even though I saw the movie Camelot more than 50 years ago, I still have a mental picture of the sincere, anxious and vulnerable face of King Arthur played by Richard Harris. The King was on the verge of the loss of his Queen and didn’t know what to do. It had been a very long time since he had been visited by Merlin, his friend, teacher and confidante. King Arthur felt alone, yet there he was, in the forest, talking to the Merlin he could not see.

Merlin, the Druid, the wise man of the forest who lived like a hermit, conjures for me at this New Moon in Virgo, Key 9, The Hermit of Tarot, which is assigned to Virgo.

Sure enough, the New Moon is opposite Saturn, suggesting that we might feel alone in the face of perplexing practical problems. With the Sun, Moon and Saturn also square Jupiter, our dilemmas might relate to the need for expansion in the face of apparent obstruction and fear. What shall it be, faith in our goals or fear of disappointment? Are we going to feel silly for daring or hoping? Are we going to say to ourselves, “Who do you think you are?” Are we going to be the ones to suggest to another that their desire is wishful and their venture is unlikely to succeed?

We have to be especially careful to not calibrate ourselves in accordance with what others might think, when they tend to be the voice of our inner doubter.

What to do? We might ask ourselves. What’s the instruction? What’s the step? Mars squaring Neptune, suggests that there is no straightforward answer or known formula. Mars is in aspect to Pallas-Athene, representing wisdom and strategy. Pluto, now back into Capricorn, feels like the glimpse of a lighted landscape has disappeared after the flash of inspiration. We may be tempted to give up.

I recall the story of the man who gave up on his goldmine, when he was just four feet from the gold. The darkest hour is just before dawn, says theologian Thomas Fuller. The majority of planets in this chart New Moon chart are mutable, so don’t be surprised to find yourself a little wobbly and doubtful. Mutability is the opportunity to change, improve, and make better even when it feels like too many moving and as yet untested parts. When you are trying to do a new thing, you have not the confidence of having done it before. You are experimenting and testing. Complete the test and review the results. Do not abandon the test because it's too hard and you’ve been at it too long and disappointment seems inevitable and unbearable.

Practicum

Tune into your inner guide, your higher self. Don’t quit. Don’t force. If you are not clear on what to do, suspend action.  Action will not compensate for lack of alignment.  You are guided moment by moment. Remember that.
