Skeleton Woman

I am reminded of the story of the fisherman who hoped his catch would be a big one—something to feed him for a long time to come.  Something that would prolong the need to fish for a while. Deep, deep in the water was the skeletal remains of a young woman who was tossed into the sea by her father for not obeying his will in favor of her own.

It was the fisherman’s good fortune and bad fortune to tangle the bones of Skelton Woman in his net. As he raced to get away from her after glimpsing her skull with the two oval empty eye sockets, he only succeeded in making her appear to be animated and chasing him.

The storyteller says that the lesson is that you can’t run away from your own discarded bones that supported the life you were meant to fulfill. You fished the bones out of the water, and you can’t run away from them because you will not live until you deal with the discounted and devalued thing. This is the good of the matter.

The way I see it, we have free will and so we do not get rescued by the God/Good by the values that we do not completely honor. We plead and race, but the bones give chase. We can’t escape.

We despair. Why have we been forsaken? Is it because of what we forsook and threw into the ocean? Is it because our words and meditations refuse to consider that our wholeness must include the discarded? We say that they are divided from us.  Are we divided within ourselves?

It’s an old, old, story. I, human, am black and white and good and not so good. In actuality, I am a spiritual being having a human experience. I feel so very human in the frail sense of the word when I behave as if I were not a spiritual being: when I think I am only good and the skeleton woman clatters after me anyway.

Practicum

  • Give grace to those you don’t understand.

  • Seek the neutral space between your own polarities (the neutral space is above and between, like the apex of the triangle).

  • Love yourself.

  • Fear not.
